04 / Something new at the table

Con comidas

Bring one new flavour to a familiar plate. Start with the meal you already love making.

Rice, roasted vegetables and yuzu at a simple table set for one

What is on the table?

Begin with food you already make. Give one ingredient a clear role: ginger mixed into a familiar sauce, yuzu in a dressing, or a small citrus finish beside dessert.

01

Ginger in a familiar sauce.

02

Yuzu as the citrus note.

03

A citrus finish beside something plain.

Yuzu fruit beside cooked greens, citrus dressing, yogurt with preserve and a glass of water

Mix, dip or finish. Give the ingredient one job, then taste it with the food.

A spoonful before a whole plate.

A small mixing bowl

Try a little of the addition separately. Keep the main dish as it is until you like the balance.

A clean tasting spoon

Taste the addition with a bite of the actual food. Something that tastes strong on its own may work differently on the plate.

The right format

Fresh ginger, ginger powder, yuzu juice and sweet yuzu preserves are not interchangeable. Read the ingredients before deciding where to use them.

Make this moment yours.

01 / With Meals

Rice & vegetables

Mix or dip / Serve the addition separately

A familiar rice bowl is an easy place to try ginger. Keep the vegetables and rice as you normally prepare them and experiment with a little of the sauce.

Have to hand

Your cooked dish, a small bowl, a spoon and fresh ginger or a sauce already made with ginger.

What to do

  1. Set aside a spoonful of a dressing or sauce you already like. If using fresh ginger, wash it and finely grate a little on a stable surface.
  2. Mix a small amount of ginger into the test portion, or use a prepared ginger sauce according to its instructions. Taste it with one bite of rice and vegetables.
  3. Adjust only the test bowl until you like the result. Bring it to the table as a separate dip or drizzle so each person can choose how much to add.

Remember the pairing

Note the sauce and dish together. If a ready-made sauce already tastes salty or sweet, judge it before adding more seasoning.

02 / With Meals

Salad & greens

Dress / Taste on a leaf

Let yuzu take the place of a citrus element in a dressing you know. Start with juice intended for cooking, keeping sweet preserves for a different experiment.

Have to hand

Washed, prepared greens, your usual dressing ingredients, a small bowl and yuzu juice.

What to do

  1. Make a small test portion of your usual dressing, using a little yuzu juice for the citrus element. Keep the remaining ingredients familiar.
  2. Dip a leaf into the dressing and taste them together. Adjust the balance a little at a time; the goal is a dressing that suits the greens, not the strongest possible citrus flavour.
  3. Dress only the amount you are about to serve, then toss gently. Offer any remaining dressing separately and follow ingredient storage directions for leftovers.

Try another texture

The same test can work with a familiar cooked vegetable served as you normally prepare it. Taste on that vegetable rather than assuming the salad balance will be identical.

03 / With Meals

A small dessert

Finish / A little preserve

A yuzu preserve can bring sweetness, peel and aroma to a simple dessert. Let a small amount be an accent so you can taste it alongside the base.

Have to hand

Plain yogurt or another familiar dessert, a clean spoon and yuzu preserve intended for eating.

What to do

  1. Read the preserve's ingredient and storage information. Taste a little to understand its sweetness and the texture of the peel.
  2. Spoon a small amount beside the yogurt or dessert, leaving part of it plain. Try a bite of the two together before mixing the whole bowl.
  3. Add more only if the pairing needs it. Close the jar and store it as directed, using a clean spoon each time.

Keep the contrast

A plain base lets the citrus stand out. The same idea can work beside toast at breakfast, so remember the pairing for another moment.

Let everyone choose their own amount.

Serving a new dressing or sauce on the side keeps the meal familiar and the experiment small. Check the whole recipe and product labels when cooking for someone with ingredient preferences or allergies.

Let the meal become an evening.

Clear a little space, put work aside and make room for a quiet cup or a conversation.
