The landscape
The name connects a place and a craft.
The China Agricultural Museum presents West Lake's tea culture as a system of gardens, tea making and local practice. Longjing's characteristic flat leaf gives the hand of the maker a visible form.
Spring brings attention back to the new leaf and the first pan work of the season. Spreading, firing, resting and finishing create a rhythm of movement and pause. The craft becomes visible in the leaves before the kettle is even filled.
Ways of making
The leaf meets the pan.
Four moments in traditional hand processing, condensed from a much more attentive craft.
01
Spread the fresh leaf
Freshly picked leaves are spread before firing. This preparation is part of the maker's response to the condition of the leaf.
02
First firing
The first pan stage, qingguo, heats and begins shaping the leaves. Movement and contact with the pan form part of the technique.
03
Rest
The leaves are spread again between pan stages. This interval belongs to the process as much as the more visible work at the pan.
04
Finish the shape
The final firing, huiguo, completes the shaping and drying. The finished flat leaves are the starting point for the cup you prepare at home.
In everyday culture
Skill that continues in the cup.
UNESCO's account of Chinese tea practice brings cultivation, processing, drinking and sharing together. That is the spirit of this chapter: the tea garden and the kitchen table belong to the same conversation.
You do not need elaborate equipment to pay attention. Notice the dry leaf, follow the maker's brewing guidance and taste as the cup cools. The origin story gives you more to notice, while leaving room for your own preference.
The people behind the place.
We have not yet published a verified West Lake tea maker profile. This is a guide to the place and its craft. A future feature will name the grower or maker and provide evidence for the tea's stated growing area, harvest and processing.
