Rock Tea

An oolong tradition associated with Wuyi. Explore the leaf, the roast and the maker's choices behind each cup.

A cup shaped by making.

Wuyi rock tea belongs to the oolong family. Its making includes withering, working the leaf, heating, rolling and roasting. The result can vary with the leaf and the maker's decisions, so a regional name is only a starting point. Ask what this particular tea is and how the producer suggests you brew it.

Find your format.

Loose leaf

A useful format when you want to see the dry leaf and adjust your brewing within the maker's guidance. Keep the tea's identity and harvest information with it.

Portioned packs

Individually packed leaf can make the amount easier to repeat. Check the recommended vessel size and preparation method rather than assuming every packet makes the same cup.

Prepared blend

A drink or blend bearing a rock tea name may contain other ingredients. Read what supplies the tea flavour and what has been added.

A place to start.

Read the brewing advice

Begin with the amount, water temperature and time given by the tea maker. A small teapot and a larger mug can require different approaches.

Prepare one clear comparison

Use a clean vessel and the recommended amount. When the brew is ready, separate the liquor from the leaves if that is the method you are following.

Taste as it cools

Notice the aroma, body and finish. If the maker recommends further infusions, follow that guidance and compare how the same leaves change.

Make room for the tea's own character.

Rock tea contains caffeine. Choose a time that suits you, and read the full ingredients of blends. Tasting terms are descriptions to explore; they do not guarantee that every tea will taste the same.

What to look for.

Find the actual growing area

Look for a more specific account when a seller makes a Wuyi origin claim. A mountain image or regional name by itself does not verify the contents.

Learn about the roast

Ask how the producer describes the tea's processing and flavour. Use that account to choose a style you want to taste.

Keep the leaves protected

Follow the pack's storage guidance and reseal it after use. Retain enough product information to reorder or compare the tea later.
