Goji
Small red berries with a familiar place in soups, drinks and pantry jars. Start with the fruit and the format you have.
Let the fruit lead.
Goji is encountered fresh, dried and in prepared products. Dried berries offer a convenient starting point for exploring a recipe written for the fruit. Zhongning supplies one well-documented regional story, but a goji label alone does not specify where the berries grew. Read the product's own account alongside its ingredients and preparation directions.
Find your format.
Dried berries
Choose a pack intended for the way you plan to use it. Check whether the berries are ready to eat or need preparation before adding them to a dish.
Fresh or frozen fruit
These formats require their own storage and handling. Follow the producer's directions and use a recipe that accounts for their different texture.
Juice or blend
Read whether you have pure juice, a diluted drink or a mixture. Added sweetness and other ingredients change its role in a recipe.
A place to start.
Choose a familiar dish
Start with a soup, porridge or other recipe written for goji. Use the fruit format it specifies so the texture is easier to judge.
Follow the pack and recipe
Check washing, soaking or cooking directions before beginning. Add the berries at the stage stated by the recipe rather than guessing from another dried fruit.
Notice the change
Taste the finished dish and notice what the fruit adds. Keep a note of the format and amount in the recipe you enjoyed.
A berry name does not describe a blend.
Goji may appear alongside tea, sweeteners or other botanicals. Read the full ingredient list and the finished product's directions, especially when choosing a drink for a particular time of day.
What to look for.
Compare like with like
Dried fruit, juice and concentrates are different products. Begin with the form that fits your recipe before comparing the rest of the label.
Read the origin detail
If Zhongning or Ningxia is named, look for the producer's account of where the fruit grew. Size and redness are not provenance records.
Keep the storage advice
Reseal the pack and follow its storage and use-after-opening instructions. Preserve the batch details if you transfer the fruit to a jar.
Find a moment for it.
Bring the ingredient into an ordinary part of your day.
A place behind the ingredient.
Follow the regional tradition in the World Atlas. This association describes cultural context, not the provenance of every product with this ingredient.
