The landscape
Begin below the surface.
Longxi's huangqi growing area is described through upland conditions and deep, loose loess soils. For an ingredient known by its root, the ground is an essential part of the story: what we eventually see above the counter began below the surface.
The county's cool, comparatively dry climate also belongs to its history as a place for storing and trading herbal materials. Growing, preparing and keeping the harvest connect the fields to a wider network of workshops, warehouses and markets.

Ways of making
Following the root.
An overview of cultivation and preparation. The exact sequence depends on the finished format.
01
Grow
Cultivation begins with the site and the planting material. In the Longxi account, raising seedlings and managing the field are part of a crop that will be valued for its root.
02
Harvest
The root is recovered from the soil. The branching form becomes visible as the ingredient moves from fieldwork into preparation.
03
Clean and prepare
Soil and unwanted material are removed before the root is prepared for its intended format. Whole roots and slices need different handling.
04
Dry and select
Drying and selection bring the ingredient towards its finished form. Whole roots show the length and branching structure; cut pieces reveal a different view of the same material.
In everyday culture
A place of growers and traders.
Longxi's herbal culture extends beyond the field. A regional account published by China's health commission describes the markets at Wenfeng and Shouyang alongside local cultivation and processing. Growers, preparers and traders each carry part of the ingredient's journey.
That gives this origin a working character. Follow a root through its changing forms: recovered from the earth, cleaned, dried and prepared. The story is also about the practical knowledge that allows a harvest to be kept and passed on.
